The Director of National Parks is a Commonwealth authority and a corporation sole established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The Director's primary role is managing Commonwealth reserves and conservation zones established under the Act. Find out more about our roles.
In carrying out its responsibility for managing terrestrial reserves the Director is assisted by Parks Australia - a division of the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities. The Department's Marine Division is responsible for managing marine reserves.
The Director maintains a close working relationship with the Department, including on freedom of information matters. The Department's Freedom of Information Coordinator manages requests made under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 by members of the public for access to Director of National Park documents, which are also made available on the Department's website here.
The Freedom of Information Act gives any person the right to:
- access copies of documents (except exempt documents) that the Director of National Parks holds
- ask for information the Director holds about you to be changed or annotated if it is incomplete, out of date, incorrect or misleading, and
- seek a review of any decision not to allow you access to a document or not to amend your personal record.

Fees and charges
There is no application fee for a request under the Freedom of Information Act. There are no processing charges for a request for access to documents containing only personal information about you. However, processing charges may apply to other requests. Details of the fees and charges associated with processing other requests can be found here.
The Director is required by section 11C of the Freedom of Information Act to publish a disclosure log online. This log lists information that has been released in response to a request for access to documents under the Freedom of Information Act received after 1 May 2011.
The Director complies with its obligations under section 11C by listing information that it has released on the Department's disclosure log.

Information publication scheme
Under section 8 of the Freedom of Information Act, the Director of National Parks is required to publish a range of information online as part of an Information Publication Scheme. This includes its structure, functions, appointments, annual reports, consultation arrangements and details of a Freedom of Information contact officer. Information routinely released from Freedom of Information requests and routinely provided to parliament must also be published online.
